Abuse happens in same-sex relationships at the same rate as it does in opposite-sex relationships.

Domestic abuse comes in many forms: verbal, emotional, physical, sexual, economic, spiritual and more. In any intimate relationship, domestic violence occurs when one partner uses coercion, manipulation or intimidation to maintain power and control over another.

Often, in LGBTQI relationships where abuse is occurring, insults or threats that are homophobic or transphobic are used as additional weapons. Without intervention, abuse will almost always escalate over time.

At Esperanza, we offer specialized services and groups for the LGBTQI community facilitated by caring, competent staff. We understand that homophobia and transphobia can be a painful part of not only the abuse itself, but also the systems in place to serve survivors and their families. And we ensure that our services do not perpetuate this.

Our confidential shelter, counseling, court advocacy and other services are available for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex individuals experiencing abuse.
